GOVERNMENT KOLASIB COLLEGE
BEST PRACTICES SUCCESSFULLY IMPLEMENTED BY THE INSTITUTION FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2022-2023
BEST PRACTICE-I
Title of the Practice: Green Initiatives
Objectives:
- To promote environmental awareness among students.
- To encourage students towards the adoption of a sustainable lifestyle.
- Green landscaping of the college campus as well as selected areas outside of the campus.
The Context: Protection of the environment is a key issue which has permeated all spheres of life. Amid the global ecological crisis around climate change and the multitude of environmental issues that we face today, it has become imperative to raise a generation of youths who understand the importance of sustaining and conservation the environment.
The Practice: The college has undertaken different activities which focus on conserving, and sustaining the environment. The Eco Club and NSS Units of the college have organized awareness campaigns, and drives on different environment-related issues in collaboration with IQAC. Important environment days have regularly been observed. Landscaping initiatives such as tree/ sapling plantations, cleanliness drives, have been carried out by the Eco Club and NSS Units within and outside of the campus. Awareness campaigns have been organized on the adverse effects of single use plastics, water conservation and harvesting measures, and other environmental hazards such as ozone depletion and its remedial measures. In this direction, the college has made collaborative efforts with environment clubs, local NGOs, and government agencies for awareness workshops, planting and clearing trees, and cleanliness drives.
Evidence of Success: The Green initiatives that have been undertaken by the college has increasingly promoted awareness of our environment amongst students. Landscaping initiatives and green campus has a positive impact on students as they thrive on an aesthetically appealing environment. Students have enthusiastically participated in the cleanliness drives, awareness workshops, and plantation drives organized by the college and hence taken a step toward environmental sustainability.
Problems: Financial and time constrains remain the biggest hindrance in the undertaking of these green initiatives.
BEST PRACTICE - II
Title of the Practice: Capacity Building Initiatives
Objectives:
- To enhance the students’ communication skills: personal, inter-personal and presentation skills, emotional intelligence, and foster all round personal development.
- To develop digital literacy among students by providing basic ICT knowledge to help them function in a digital society
The Context: With education becoming a dynamic domain, capacity building programs enable students and teachers alike to face the challenges to today’s environment. Capacity building involves enhancing an individual’s knowledge, skill, and capacity to carry out tasks efficiently.
The Practice: In an effort to groom students of Government Kolasib College to confront challenges in work and study, the Capacity Building Committee & IQAC of the College organized lecture series on “Personality & Soft Skills Development” during the academic year 2022-23. During this series, lectures were delivered on topics relating to personality development, followed by interactive sessions. The digital world today also requires that students are exposed to latest trends in technology. In connection to this, the Department of BCA has offered CCC (Course on Computer Concepts), a mandatory course for job applications, designed to help students become digitally literate and use computers at the academic, professional, and personal level. The institution further opens this course for students and the general public.
Evidence of Success: Students have become more competent and confident as a result of these programs and courses, and it further enhances students’ job prospects and employability.
Problems: Capacity building as a process can take a long period of time to achieve its objectives, therefore time remains the biggest constraint.
