Extension activities carried out in the neighborhood community 2023-2024
Blood Donation
- February 14, 2024: Voluntary Blood Donation Camp and Awareness Campaign on Blood Donation was organised by Government Kolasib College N.S.S. Units in collaboration with Mizoram State Aids Control Society (MSACS); Blood Bank, District Hospital, Kolasib; Red Ribbon Club, Govt. Kolasib College; Association for Voluntary Blood Donation, Kolasib Branch; and The Alumni Association, Govt. Kolasib College. Dr. Janet Zoremnghaki, as a resource person, presented an awareness speech on blood donation. A total of 102 volunteers (78 male and 24 female) from the College donated blood on this occasion.
Cleanliness Drive, Plantation Activities and Awareness Program
- August 24-25, 2023: The Eco-Club in collaboration with NSS Unit, Govt. Kolasib College jointly organised Cleanliness Drive cum Sapling Plantation at College Campus, Khuangpuilam. The program was attended by 15 Eco Club members and 17 NSS volunteers with 5 faculty members of the College.
- September 22, 2023:In celebration of NSS Rising Day, cleanliness drive was conducted at the market place in Venglai, Kolasib by cleaning garbage and single use plastic waste under the supervision of the NSS Programme Officers.
- October 6, 2023:Cleanliness drive was organized by NSS Units within the College campus wherein cleaning of office building, classrooms, main hall and toilets were carried out. This programme was conducted under the supervision of the NSS Programme Officers.
- December 5-6, 2023: The Eco-Club, Govt. Kolasib Collegein collaboration with Mizoram Pollution Control Board (MPCB) organized “Nature Camp” at Zongaw Reserve Forest, Sialsuk. The members of the Eco Club conducted nature walk, biodiversity study, documentation and identification of cryptogamic plants with other higher plants from the forest. Cleanliness drive was also conducted at Sialsuk Tlang.
The Eco club in collaboration with Botany Department, Govt. Kolasib College also organized “Awareness Campaign on Single Use Plastic” at Sialsuk Higher Secondary School with Dr. P.C. Lalremruata, Secretary, Eco Club, GKC as a resource person. The resource person highlighted the adverse effects of single-use plastic on the air, water and soil. He was also highlighted the importance of re-use, reduce and re-cycle of single-use plastic. The program was attended by 65 Eco Club members from Govt. Kolasib College and Sialsuk Higher Secondary School.
- February 9, 2024: The Eco-Club, Govt. Kolasib College in collaboration with Urban Development & Poverty Alleviation (UD&PA) organised Cleanliness Drive cum Awareness on Single Use Plastics. Mr. Bishnu Jaishi, Green Teacher, Eco Club, GKC was chair and the resource person Mr. Obeda Lalhuliana, Sanitation Inspector Officer, UD&PA, Kolasib delivered an “Awareness on Single Use Plastics”.
Cleanliness Drive was done inside the campus. The collected waste was segregated and disposed by the selected student at Urban Development & Poverty Alleviation (UD&PA) Dumping Ground, Kolasib. Mr. Laldinthara, JE (i/c UD&PA Dumping site, Kolasib) showed how different waste/thrash types were separated and disposed of, including Single Use Plastics and Biodegradable Waste. The program was attended by all Science students and II Semester Arts students with 3 green teachers.
- February 28, 2024: On 28th February, 2024, NCC, Govt. Kolasib College conducted a cleanliness drive as part of the “Puneet Sagar Abhyan” campaign. In this programme, Care taker Officers and 20 cadets participated by cleaning college campus, old boys hostel ground and other various other neighbor areas.
- March 21, 2024: The Eco-Club and Department of Botany, GKC in collaboration with Environment, Forest & Climate Change (EFCC), Kolasib Forest Division organized “Nature Walk cum Plantation Programme” at Vengthar Reserve Forest, Kolasib and Govt. Kolasib College Campus, Khuangpuilam in observance of International Day of Forests, 2024. The members of the Eco-Club conducted nature walk along with plants documentation in the reserve forests. 40 different species of plants were also planted inside the College Campus, Khuangpuilam. The program was attended by 20 Eco-Club members and 3 green teachers from Govt. Kolasib College.
- May 27, 2024:Save Tuichhuahen Project Kick-Off Programme and Cleanliness Drive was organised by Eco-Club, GKC as the start-up initiative to protect and clean Tuichhuahen river, the main source of water supply for Kolasib town. The Kick-off programme was held at the college campus with the Deputy Commissioner of Kolasib District after which 50 students and 10 faculty members went to the river for onsite cleaning and clearing of garbage and debris.
- June 5, 2024: Eco-Club, GKC in collaboration with Urban Development & Poverty Alleviation (UD&PA) organised a follow upprogrammeto theSave Tuichhuahen Project in observance of World Environment Day, 2024. Over 20 students and teachers from GKC, Mr. Gilbert Lalhlimpuia, DUDO, MCS and members of UD&PA took part in this cleanliness drive. UD&PA provided basic requirements such as gloves and garbage bags along with transportation facilities of the gathered garbage to UD&PA dumping site.
Special Camping
During the academic year of 2023-2024, three special campings were organised at the following villages/localities:
- Meidum : Special Camping was organized at Meidum, Kolasib District which is about 53 kms from the College campus for the purpose of construction of public waiting shed at Meidum Vengthlang during 7th to 13th April,2024. 50 NSS volunteers with four Programme Officers and some Village Council members participated in the construction.
- Khuangpuilam : At Khuangpuilam, Kolasib, Kolasib District, about 3 kms from the College campus, renovation of public waiting shed was carried out during 27th May to 2nd June, 2024.
- Shalom Veng, Vengthar: At Shalom Veng, Kolasib Vengthar, Kolasib District, 2.2 kms from the College campus, renovation of public waterpoint was carried out during 23rd to 29th June, 2024.
The above mentioned special campings were organized under the theme ‘‘Drug abuse, tobacco and cancer control”in collaboration with the Village Council Leaders and community members of the villages concerned. NSS Programme Officers and Volunteers and Local/Village Volunteers participated in these events.
Charity
- December 22, 2023: Students’ Union Leaders of GKC, on occasion of the festive season, collected cash and clothes for donation. A total of Rs.7800 cash and 9 large bags of clothes were collected which were then distributed to the needful.
- April 25, 2024: The students and teachers of the Department of Public Administration and Department of History, Govt. Kolasib College paid a charitable visit to Thutak Nunpuitu Team (TNT), a charitable institution for the orphans, homeless, destitutes, etc., at Khuangpuilam, Kolasib to donate cash and clothes.
Mathematics Competition
The Department of Mathematics, Govt. Kolasib College, organized District Level Mathematics Competition 2023 on October 24, 2023. There were three levels/categories – Middle School, High School and Higher Secondary School. The competition result was published on November 2, 2024. Incentive cash awards were given to the top three students in each of the three categories, and a felicitation programme for the same was held on November 15, 2024 in the office Chamber of the Principal, Govt. Kolasib College.
Outreach Programmes
- August 3, 2023:Students and teachers of the Department of Education organised a Field Visit to Anganwadi Centre at Project Veng, Kolasib for interaction and learning experience. Faculties and 5th Semester Students of the Department participated in this program. Students had a good interaction with the Anganwadi workers and beneficiaries, and also learned the food planner, nutrition, teaching aids, vaccination planner, growth charts and measuring equipment for height and weight.
- August 9-10, 2023: A Two-Day Outreach Program was conducted by the Department of Physics, Government Kolasib College at Hmarveng Secondary School (Saidan), Kolasib, Mizoram.As requested by the concerned school that their IX & X classes are facing problems in understanding Physics portion of their syllabus, two of our colleagues voluntarily came forward to do the needful and took classes on those days. The two resource persons were Miss Lalrinpuii and Mr. Lalramfela Ngurte. The concerned school and the Department of Physics expressed gratitude to both the faculty members for their concern.
- August 21-22, 2023: Department of Chemistry, GKC organised a two-day Workshop on Experimental Chemistry for Secondary School students. 51 students from Class X of Hmar Veng High School under the supervision of their Science teacher participated in this workshop. During the course of demonstration, several experiments – acid, base and salts; neutralization reaction; redox reaction; displacement reaction; double displacement reaction – based on their syllabus were performed and explained.
- August 29, 2023:45 students and two teachers from Brighter Faith Academyvisited several Science laboratories in the college, one of them being Physics laboratory. The students were presented with experimental and visual demonstration of reflection and refraction as written in their textbooks.
- August 29, 2023: The students and teachers from Brighter Faith Academy, Electric Veng also visited the laboratory of Zoology Department. The visiting students were guided by Mr. Lalrintluanga, Department of Zoology.A variety of animal specimens were displayed to the student. Pinned insect specimensand fossils collected from Kolasib area were also shown to the students.Glasswares such as burette, beakers, test tubes, glass slides, flasks, etc were shown tothe students. A brief working of a compound microscope was also demonstrated.Additionally, the working principle of a micropipette was also demonstrated.
- August 29, 2023: Botany Department, Govt. Kolasib College was visited by students from middle section Brighter Faith Academy. Demonstration of laboratory and practical on cell study was performed and guided by Lalthasangi, Asst.Professor and 6th semester students, Botany department, Government Kolasib college.
- September 19-20, 2023: The Department of Physics, GKC organised a two-day Workshop on Experimental Physics. 36 students from Classes IX and X of Chawnghmingliani Memoral High School, Kolasib participated in the workshop. Participants were taught the techniques of slide calipers, screw gauge and spherometer related experiments. Experiments on measuring the acceleration due to gravity ‘g’ at a place particularly, Kolasib, with the help of simple pendulum; proving the laws of reflection and refraction with the help of mirror and glass prism; and demonstration of Newton’s Ring by Sodium light were done.
- September 22, 2023: Department of Zoology, GKC organized an outreach seminar at Govt. Kolasib High School, in observance of “World Rivers Day” and “World Environmental Health Day”. Mr. Lalrintluanga, Dept. of Zoology was the resource person. Vanlaltluangzela and Mercy Lalduhsaki, students of the Dept. of Zoology hosted the event. Approximately 70 students along with their teachers attended the talk.
- October 30, 2023: Department of Chemistry, GKC organised an Outreach Programme on the Basics of Chemistry at Government Kawnpui Higher Secondary School. All students of the newly started Science stream participated in this programme. Mr. Matthew G. Lalzawmliana and Dr. Ngainunsiami, Assistant Professors, Dept. of Chemistry delivered lectures on the basics of Inorganic Chemistry and Organic Chemistry respectively.

- December 6, 2023: The Department of Geography, Government Kolasib College in collaboration with Eco-Club, GKC organized an Outreach Programmeat Sialsuk Higher Secondary School, Sialsuk. Mr. Zoramkhuma, Assistant Professor, Department of Geography gave a presentation on the topic, “Groundwater: Protecting Invisible Resources”. 65 students from Government Kolasib College and Sialsuk HSS with 6 faculty members from the College attended the program.
- December 6, 2023: The Department of English, Government Kolasib College in collaboration with Eco Club, GKC organized an Outreach Programme on December 6, 2023 at Sialsuk Higher Secondary School, Sialsuk. Dr. Catherine Laldinpuii, Assistant Professor, Department of English gave presentation on the topic “Sap Tawng: Familiarizing the language for Eco-tourism”.
- January 23, 2024:The Department of English, GKC conducted an Outreach Programme at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Thingdawl. 50 students and 2 faculty members participated in this programme.
- February 16, 2024:Bird count and conservation awarenessprogramme was conducted by Departments of Botany and Zoology, GKC.The activity was conducted as an extension activity at Government Middle School, Buhchangphai. All the students of Zoology and Botany attended the program. The theme/topic was chosen in line with the internationally celebrated “Great Backyard Bird Count”. GBBC is conducted worldwide through 16th-19th February, 2024. Mr. Christopher Lawlor was the resource person. With his expertise in birds and having published a book on the waterbirds of Kolasib district, Mr. Lawlor gave an enlightening talk on the birds of Buhchangphai and stressed on the need to protect these birds. Two copies of “Waterbirds of Kolasib” was gifted to the school by the Dept. of Zoology, GKC. A poster was also gifted to the school by the Kolasib Forest Department. After the talk in the morning, the students were taken into the fields for a session of bird counting.12 species of birds were spotted. A total of 48 birds were counted.The students were also provided with light refreshment.
- April 5, 2024: Department of Chemistry, GKC organised a program on Monitoring water quality of Tuichhuahen river and Tuikhurs at Buhchangphai, Kolasib District. 18 students, 3 faculty members, a demonstrator and a lab bearer participated in this program. Water samples were taken from several tuikhurs, ponds, and rivers en route to Buhchangphai. Soil samples were also taken from paddy and maize fields. The following parameters were monitored for water: pH, total hardness, bicarbonate, phosphate, nitrate, ammonia, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, calcium, magnesium, arsenic, EC and TDS. The following parameters were monitored for soil: pH, nitrate, potassium, magnesium, phosphate, and calcium. Almost all the parameters studied were found to be within permissible limits. The program has benefited the local owners of several ponds, paddy and maize fields in addition to the students, given the water and soil quality was acceptable and within the permissible limits.
- May 30, 2024: The Department of Mizo,Govt.Kolasib College organized an Outreach Program at Govt. Kolasib High School. The programme, chaired by Miss Lalrinngheti, Head of the Department of Mizo, GKC, focused on highlighting the significance and goals of such outreach initiatives. Following an introductory session, students from the 6th Semester of the Mizo Department delivered speeches. Mr. Lalmalsawma delivered a talk titled “Mahriakten ar ang ka vai e, Parte by Lalzova,” delving into Lalzova’s poetry and how it reflects his emotions. Mr. Jacob Remruatfela discussed “Thalaite khawvel by Siamkima Khawlhring,” exploring the author’s perspective on the new generation. Mr. Andrew Lalbiaknunga’s talk, “Mirror’s Shadow: Exploring Narcissism and the Self,” shed light on the concept of narcissism and its psychological impact. The programme concluded with a short speech by Mr. Lalremliana, Assistant Professor, Department of Mizo, GKC, who expressed gratitude and shared an intriguing story about the establishment of Govt. Kolasib High School.
- May 30, 2024:The Department of History at Government Kolasib College conducted an outreach program at Government Primary School and Government Middle School at Meidum village. During this initiative, both students and teachers delivered lectures emphasizing the significance of education. Two students, Deepak Kumar and Fill.N Sangma, presented on the value of learning Hindi and the subject of History to the pupils of Government Primary School. Meanwhile, Vanlalhriatpuia and H. Lalrinnunga discussed some interesting historical events with the students of Government Middle School. Additionally, student R. Lalfakzela, a blue belt in karate, provided instruction in self-defence techniques at both educational institutions.
- June 3, 2024: The Department of Education,Govt.Kolasib College organized an Outreach Program at Govt. Primary School-II,Diakkawn, Kolasib. Students from VI Semester – GeorgeVanlalruata, Lalnunpuii and Lallawmawmi gave lectures on the topic “Health and Hygiene”. This program was conducted to raise awareness and educate the students about essential health and hygiene practices. Mr. T. Lalremruata, Head of Department, Department of Education presented four dustbins to the Headmistress of the school.
- June 3, 2024: An Outreach Program was carried out by the Chemistry Department of Govt. Kolasib college at Government Diakkawn Middle School-II, Kolasib.Twenty pupils from class 7 along with the subject matter teacher from the school attended the lecture and practical session delivered by the final semester student Mr. Subhash Gaha from the Chemistry department, Govt. Kolasib College under the guidance of a faculty member. The topic of discussion was “Acids, Bases, and Salts” as well as “Electricity and its Effects”. Given that the school's expertise of the subject matter was weak, the outreach program proved very beneficial to the school as the resource person was sufficiently competent to allay the students' doubts, and the students appreciated the lecturer and the practical session. The head of the school expressed gratitude for the program and expressed interest in hosting similar events in the future.
- June 3, 2024: The Department of Botany,Govt.Kolasib Collegeorganized an Outreach Program at Govt. Middle School-III,Diakkawn, Kolasib. 6th Semester students and 3 faculty members of Department of Botany, GKC and students and teachers of Govt. Diakkawn Middle School-III The 6th Semester Students delivered lectures on selected topics from the School’s syllabus.
- June 3, 2024: The Department of Economics,Govt.Kolasib Collegeorganized an Outreach Program atGovernment Kolasib High School, Project Veng. 3 faculty members from Department of Economics, GKC, 4 sixth semester students from Department of Economics, GKC, 41 students from class X, Government Kolasib High School participated in this program. The four students from Sixth Semester, Department of Economics, GKC delivered interesting lectures each on various topics of Economics and related subjects.Light refreshments were served to all participants as a practical teaching aid during the programme.
- June 13, 2024: An Outreach Program was held at Government Primary School, Buhchangphai, Kolasib Disctrict in a collaborative effort of the Department of English and Anti-Ragging Cell, Government Kolasib College. There are 80 students enrolled in the school with 3 teachers at present. Students from the Department of English took turns teaching the school students the proper pronunciation of the alphabets and their phonetic sounds. The Anti-Ragging Cell took the opportunity to create an awareness on the topic of anti-ragging by highlighting the detrimental effects of bullying and also encourage the students to empower themselves by working hard in their studies to overcome negativity.
- June 25, 2024: Department of Physics, GKC conducted an Outreach Programme at Govt. LCM P/S XI, Kolasib. 1 faculty member and two 2nd semester students from Physics Dept., GKC and 43 students from Govt. LCM P/S XI participated in this programme. The two students from Physics Dept. delivered interesting lectures on various topics related to Physics.
